Exercise Science Curriculum Changes

 EXERCISE SCIENCE CURRICULUM CHANGES

Exercise science has gotten approval for some curriculum changes moving forward that provide more flexibility for our students.  An EXS advising document is attached – please take a close look.  For rising seniors, based on what you have completed – you may choose to stay on the old catalog or switch to the new catalog.  We’ll work with you to ensure we find the best option for you.

These changes have been approved and will be in the 2025-2026 JMU catalog.  However, they are not reflected in the 2024-2025 JMU catalog – so you will not be able to see them online until this summer/fall.

Key changes:

  • Addition of KIN 201: Introduction to Kinesiology as a Profession (2 cr)
    • Rising sophomores must register for this during the next academic year
    • Rising juniors and seniors have the option to either take KIN 201 or take an additional KIN elective
  • CHEM 132+132L will no longer be required for the major
    • Moving forward – CHEM 132+132L will not be required for the EXS concentration.  It is a requirement for the Pre-PT minor – so make sure to check with your minor advisor.
  • KIN 321 + KIN 322 (6 cr)  -> Becomes KIN 321+321L (4 cr)
    • Exercise testing and prescription will now be combined into a lecture + lab sequence, instead of the current year-long two course sequence.
    • If you have already taken KIN 321 – you must take KIN 322 this summer or fall.  Fall is the last time KIN 322 will be offered.
    • If you have not taken KIN 321 yet, KIN 321+321L will be offered beginning this fall.
  • More flexibility in psychology option
    • Students can now choose between KIN 305, KIN 426, or KIN 353 to complete a Kinesiology-based psychology requirement.  Check out the advising sheet for course titles and the catalog for course descriptions.
  • More room for EXS electives
    • KIN 424 / NUTR 455 will now be an elective option for EXS.  Students will complete three major electives (9 credits) instead of two.  This allows students more room to focus on their specific interests within Exercise Science.
    • It also allows interested students to complete the 3-course strength and conditioning sequence (KIN 425, 441, 442) within the major.
