Full-Time Recreation Specialist - Maryland

Full-Time Recreation Specialist position at the Indian Head Maryland Naval Base

This is a unique position because we are looking for a candidate who can operate a year round sports program as well as assist with the supervision of the aquatic center during the seasonal months between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

Candidates must hold a CPR/First Aide Certification along with a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification and should have knowledge with a variety of sports programs. Position description below:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent will directly supervise the staff working within the aquatics and sports programs during the pool’s seasonal operation. Supervisory responsibilities will include assisting with training of assigned staff, providing guidance regarding policies, customer relations and programming and hiring, counseling and terminating staff. Incumbent will be required to open, close and operate the aquatic facility during its seasonal operation.
Plans and administers sports programs for a military community of active and retired military as well as authorized civilian, contractors and dependents. The program primarily involves developing, planning and executing a variety of races, tournaments and leagues for each fiscal year. Plans and coordinates the details or recurring and non-recurring activities, special events and joint community undertakings within the Sports and Aquatics Programs so as to make maximum use of resources, consistent with the military mission and with the members. Schedules and publicizes sports programs, ensuring maximum effectiveness in attracting and motivating participants of all ages and in providing the widest possible range of activities in terms of community interest and needs. Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing sports activities from the standpoint of participant response, resources, unforeseen developments and program objectives. Adapts and varies program activities in the light of these findings. Provides guidance and leadership to the various sports activities and participants; modifying, adapting, expanding, or otherwise changing plans and procedures for such activities as developments require. Instructs individual participants and groups of participants in those activities for which the employee has technical expertise. Within established policy and objectives, devises, improves and adapts various activities to fit the conditions of the environment, and to conform to limitations in funds, facilities, equipment and staff support.
Prepares and justifies annual budgets for inclusion in the overall Morale, Welfare, and Recreation department budget submission. Budgets are based on needs assessment of the population served and include projected payroll, equipment, awards, training, travel and lodging. Estimates projected income derived from fees and charges. Monitors inventories, cost controls, patron counts and maintains related records and reports.
Arranges for equipment, supplies and services needed to accomplish scheduled sports programs and makes recommendations for improvements. Inspects and maintains facilities, equipment and supplies used for sports activities, events and programs. Establishes and oversees various NAF contracts that provide services for leagues and tournaments Maintains telephone and contact lists for groups and individuals that can be used to provide various program activities. Assists with reservations, contracts and access lists for various fitness, sports and aquatics facilities.
