Speak to Girl Scouts group

Dr. Josh Pate is  seeking a volunteer to speak to a Girl Scouts group about the importance of exercise and possibly lead them in exercise examples. They thought a student would be good at this. Female is ideal for this opportunity. Interested? Contact Dr. Pate at patejr@jmu.edu.

Graduate Assistantship - Ball State

Dr. Paul Nagelkirk at Ball State University (alma mater of Dr. Nick Luden and Dr. Trent Hargens) has an assistantship available for a Master’s student beginning next year.  I believe it’s a research assistantship and the student would be working with him on studies related to blood coagulation and fibrinolysis.  Any interested students can contact him directly at prnagelkirk@bsu.edu

Organic Hop Farming Internship - VA

Internship with Seven Hollows Farm focused on organic hop crops

The internship is with Seven Hollows Farm, and the intern will have the opportunity to gain experience cultivating organic hops and building a hops business through marketing. The farm is located in Orkney Springs, VA (about 35 minutes from JMU campus).

The Intern can assume the duties of both positions, or choose between the agriculture or marketing aspect of the business. The work at the farm is part-time and on the weekends, and the marketing can be done from home on their own time.

Part-time Employment Opportunity

Wellness Instructor/Lifeguard  - Come join our nationally recognized Wellness Team for an opportunity to grow and learn in the field of Fitness and Wellness. Part-time position working up to 16 hours every two weeks; 8am – 4:30pm and occasionally 8:30am – 12noon on Saturdays. Responsibilities include assisting senior residents with one-to-one exercise sessions, and guarding the pool areas. Qualified applicants should have a High School diploma and experience in aquatic or fitness/wellness field.  Must have current lifeguard certification or be able to acquire lifeguard certification. Summer Wellness Internship - (California & Texas) 

Apple Wellness offers a hands-on internship for undergraduate and graduate students in the field of exercise physiology, health and wellness and kinesiology. The internship offers experience in both the Fitness Center and in the Preventive Care settings. Students gain practical experience in lifestyle counseling, exercise prescription, and exercise leadership for a large and diverse population. Interns will have the opportunity to assist with clinical testing including resting and exercise EKG’s, maximal stress testing and VO2-max testing.

Students must have experience in or knowledge of: 

• Weight training and the design of personal exercise programs
• Prepping and assisting with maximal graded exercise tests • Performing a variety of fitness tests such as body composition
• General nutrition and dietary analysis
• Must have completed coursework in exercise physiology, health promotion, Kinesiology or a similar curriculum, and be knowledgeable of ACSM guidelines.
• Good communication skills and high level of professionalism are essential; patient/client interaction is a vital aspect of our program.
• Interns are expected to be highly motivated, organized, self-directed and open to feedback to insure a beneficial internship experience

The duration is 12 weeks and compensation includes hourly salary, relocation, and housing assistance. Internship opportunities are available in Austin, Texas and Santa Clara Valley, California.

PT Tech Employment - local

**FOR EXERCISE SCIENCE STUDENTS PLANNING TO GRADUATE IN MAY ’17:
 
Appalachian Physical Therapy is in search of a soon-to-be-graduate looking for a job as a PT Aide. The position will be full-time starting in May, but has the potential for some part-time hours before then for training and as a floater between the Broadway and Harrisonburg offices. The job is very rewarding and especially great for a student who wishes to take a year off before going to PT school. Below are a few required qualities that a potential applicant should have.

Graduate Program focused on Exercise Oncology

Master of Science in Cancer Care


This program is the first cancer care master’s degree in the nation focused on exercise oncology within a multi-disciplinary approach. Courses embrace a variety of disciplines (e.g., exercise physiology, nutrition, physical therapy, psychology)  while remaining strictly focused on current scientific knowledge of cancer.
