Summer 2022 Internship Opportunities

John Newby, CEO of Virginia Bio, is excited to announce the launch of the new STEM2VA: Virginia Statewide Life Science Summer Internship Program to 100 undergraduate and graduate students with life science companies for an eight-week internship experience from June 6-July 29, 2022. 
This internship program is an excellent opportunity to train the future workforce and identify potential new hires in the future.This program will provide experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting.

STEM2VA is an eight week, full-time, paid summer program to connect interested students to opportunities within the private sector.


Areas of Interest

STEM2VA interns are scholars with interests in becoming future scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs, in companies in the following areas:

  • Research and Development
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Diagnostics
  • Digital Health
  • Medical Devices/Equipment

Internship Locations

Participating companies selecting interns are located in:

  • Roanoke/Blacksburg/Lynchburg
  • Richmond Metropolitan Area
  • Coastal Virginia (Norfolk and Hampton Roads)
  • Northern Virginia
  • Charlottesville/Albemarle

More Information

In the application, students will identify the region/s in Virginia where they are available to participate in an internship. Housing assistance is not provided by the STEM2VA program. Housing options may be available at nearby academic institutions. This expense will be the responsibility of the internship candidates.

Students will earn a stipend of $4,200 for the eight-week program. The Internship program is a full-time 40 hours/week commitment. The exact schedule will be based upon agreement with the employer.

In addition to the immersive industry internship experience, students will be part of a statewide cohort to gain access to a broader network and learn lucrative skills in entrepreneurship, leadership, communication, and more.

Application intake for the STEM2VA Summer 2022 program begins November 1, 2021, and must be submitted by January 31, 2022.

  • Internship Decision Notice Sent by Email: March 31, 2022
  • 8-week Internship Period: June 6, 2022-July 29, 2022

Empowerment3: Physical Activity Mentorship

Are you interested in using the vehicles of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY and MENTORSHIP to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities, English language learners, refugees, as well as older adults?

ODU Sports Performance Internship SP22

The Old Dominion University Sports Performance department is now accepting applications for the following UNPAID positions for the Spring 2022 semester: 1) Strength and Conditioning Intern, 2) Sports Science Intern, and 3) Nutrition Intern. This internship will begin in January and expect to last till the end of the semester. Depending on performance, these interns may be asked to return for the summer semester. Those chosen will gain valuable experience working within a Division 1 sports performance department while assisting with the design and implementation of the sports performance programs for football, field hockey, swimming, and lacrosse. In addition, those chosen will gain experience working with sports science modalities such as ForceDecks and Playertek. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting with the supervision and execution of the sports performance programs, set up and break down for daily training, routine maintenance and cleaning of the training facility, assisting with nutrition station duties, and completion of the internship curriculum. Required qualifications include a strong work ethic, completion or current pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree in exercise science or a related course of study, and a strong desire to become a sports performance professional. In addition, one should be pursuing or have CSCS or a relevant certification (NSCA, CSCS; CSCCa, SCCC; NASM, PES; USAW).  I am a JMU Kinesiology class of 2018 alumni. I currently work as an Exercise Physiologist at the Children's Heart Institute in Herndon, VA. I know when I was at JMU you coordinated all Kinesiology internships and I wanted to let you know of an Exercise Physiologist internship available at my office. This internship can accommodate both the 90 hours and 160 hours internship requirements, as long as that is still the requirement. This internship will involve performing cardiopulmonary exercise stress tests, as well as working with our Exercise Rehabilitation program for POTS patients.
