Practicum Opportunity

Position Responsibilities: 

Assisting with the following fitness assessments:
1-repitition maximum for arm press and leg press
Curl-ups and sit ups
BIA and waist-to-hip ratio
12-minute run or swim

Assisting primary instructor with physical activity instruction (ie: correcting technique)
Leading small group activities such as resistance balls, medicine balls, resistance bands, BoSU, Body Bars, indoor cycle, yoga, stretching.

Other activities depending on applicant experience/forte.


Group Exercise or Personal Training certification, completion of KIN 199, 422, or relevant teaching experience.
Ability to arrive to class 5-10 minutes early
Ability to teach small groups of students a variety of activities
Well organized

Need to complete your Cluster 5 requirement? Want to run a half marathon (13.1 miles) near the end of the spring 2015 semester? Attend an information session on Wed Oct 29, 5:00pm, Godwin 341.

Class will be held Monday, Wednesday, Friday OR Sunday. You'll need to have a flexible schedule to enroll in this section. Some of the long run training requires a period of time that best fits in a weekend day.

Exercise Leader Practicum

Exercise Leader Practicum Experience

The JMU Kinesiology Department is offering the opportunity for motivated, hard working Kinesiology students who are interesting in serving as an individualized Exercise Leader for 2 participant volunteers throughout the course of the spring semester.  The Exercise Leader will act as Testing Technician and Exercise Leader for each of their assigned participants.  They will be responsible for all pre-screening/health history, health related physical fitness testing, and preparation of an individually tailored exercise prescription that will be implemented by the participant.  They will also be responsible for progressing their participants in their exercise plan as the semester progresses.  This will be done under the supervision of Dr. Trent Hargens, Kinesiology faculty, and Graduate Students in Kinesiology.

  1. Be certified in CPR with AED
  2. Successfully completed KIN 421: Principles of Exercise Testing and Prescription
  3. Be available during the later afternoon hours (approximately 3 - 6 pm)

Interested parties should submit a resume and a short (~ half page) description on why they would like to participate in this program, and why they would make a good practicum student for this program to Dr. Hargens. Deadline for submission is December 1, 2014
