Fieldwork Opportunity with Overcoming Barriers

Overview: JMU’s Overcoming Barriers (OB) program that affords students the opportunity to mentor children/adults with disabilities within a physical activity setting.  OB offers a wide variety of physical activity programs in which individuals with disabilities can participate.  Individuals with disabilities will be matched with a mentor who will assist them during their specific program for a minimum of once a week for eight weeks.  The mentors will be assigned an individual based on their schedules, interests, as well as their level of comfort/experience.  All mentors receive training and support from our OB staff.

Dr. Tom Moran (morante@jmu.edu) is interested in having an ES practicum or internship student help with OB during the spring semester. You would likely be involved in all aspects of the OB program from planning to participant recruitment to program execution.

Activism Internships

I receive messages from this organization regularly. Here is the message:

Thanks for forwarding our internship information to students and people in
your department. To give you the quick update, so far this fall 160 students
have gone through our training program. Interns across the country have
organized events on their campuses from canned food drives to support local
food banks to collecting hundreds of petitions to get National Geographic to
clean up its paper mill to participating in a health care panel with the
U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services.

Because of the interest we're doing one more session of our fall civic
engagement internships. Students go through a 5-week training program to
learn how to organize a campaign on campus and engage their peers on issues
that matter to them. The deadline to apply is Tuesday November 1st.

Need Continuing Education Credits?

Have you already earned a certification like ACSM, ACE or AFAA? Most fitness certifications require you to complete continuing education credits, and the number varies depending on the organization. While you are a student, you can use your Exercise Science, Nutrition, and health-related courses for recertification. After you're finished with college, you will need to seek out conferences like this one http://www.scwfitness.com/philadelphia/ to maintain your certification. I have participated in this one. It's a great location, great conference, and near home for many of you!

Richmond, VA - YMCA Internship

I received this message during the summer. (The fall 2011 internship opportunity has passed; however, if this site was once looking for an internship student, it's likely they are open to the idea of having one in the future.)

I am the Wellness Director at one of 16 branches of the YMCA in Richmond, VA, and my facility is in the heart of downtown.  We are a little more corporate-like in our business-clientele atmosphere, and we offer many services including personal training, massage therapy, programming, fitness testing, and more.  I would love the opportunity to be advertised with your listings for possible internships with your students. I am open to any number of hours or personalities at this point!

If you could help me at all with this, that would be great!  Please let me know if you have any questions, or if there is someone else I should contact regarding this.  Thanks!

Commercial Fitness Internship NoVA/DC

I was contacted by a national recruiter from Lifetime Fitness, a major commercial fitness chain in the NoVA/MD area. They are interested in creating a "feeder school" with our program. This would mean there is still an application/interview process, but the sites are very open to our students completing practical experiences with them. Since they have had great experiences with our majors completing internships and working for them, they are interested in seeing more Ex Sci students in their facilities! I think this is a very exciting partnership because so many of our students call this area home. The goal is to kick off this program in 2012! See Jana immediately if you think you might be interested in applying for a Spring 2012 internship with Lifetime!
