Exercise Science Curriculum Changes
EXERCISE SCIENCE CURRICULUM CHANGES
Exercise science has gotten approval for some curriculum changes moving forward that provide more flexibility for our students. An EXS advising document is attached – please take a close look. For rising seniors, based on what you have completed – you may choose to stay on the old catalog or switch to the new catalog. We’ll work with you to ensure we find the best option for you.
These changes have been approved and will be in the 2025-2026 JMU catalog. However, they are not reflected in the 2024-2025 JMU catalog – so you will not be able to see them online until this summer/fall.
Key changes:
Exercise Physiologist employment, Cardiac Rehab, Fishersville, VA
This opportunity was shared with me by a recent Exercise Science alumni: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4191808997

Fitness Specialist employment, Fishersville, VA
My name is Tanya Besmehn and I’m the Fitness Coordinator at Augusta Health Fitness, a state-of-the-art fitness, tennis, and aquatic center here in Fishersville, VA. We are located just 3 miles from Stanton, VA. I currently have positions open for Fitness Specialists. While a degree is preferred, it is not required, so students currently pursuing degrees or certifications are eligible for employment.
I wonder if you might put out the word to the students in Kinesiology at JMU, both present and past who might be in search of a great fitness opportunity. Please give them my contact information and let them know I’d love to discuss these open positions with them.
Thank you so much.
Kind regards,
Tanya Besmehn

Sports Medicine - Hampton Roads, VA
Depending on the number of hours possible to attain during this short term opportunity, it might be be suitable for KIN 381: Practicum (90 hours). If not enough hours, it would be a great volunteer opportunity:
My name is Jamie Field and I am an athletic trainer with Riverside Health System in Hampton Roads, VA. I am spreading the word about an undergraduate sports medicine internship opportunity we offer here at Riverside Sports Medicine. Although it is a brief, 2-week internship, past students have attested to the valuable information gained through the rotations with physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers. Interns get to observe orthopedic surgery, assist with sports physicals, learn some basic sports medicine skills, and more. Due to popular demand, we will be offering two sessions this summer- the first in June and the second in July/August. Exemplary interns will be invited to attend an additional week of an immersive observation experience during football preseason. Please see the attached flyer for additional information! I appreciate you sharing this information with your students.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns,
Jamie Field, MSAT, LAT, ATC
