Teach For America is a national non-profit that works to ensure that all
children growing up in our nation receive a quality education. Teach For America
is a two year commitment to teach in a low income community, where currently
only 8% of students go on to receive a college degree by the age of 24. In the
short term, Teach For America places top leaders in classrooms as teachers; in
the long term, Teach For America corps members become advocates for education
equity across many career fields. Expenses-paid training is provided.

looking for opportunities to connect your students with children and schools in
the community?
The Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services at
JMU is home to the Reading Road Show-Gus Bus program and the Shenandoah Valley
Migrant Education program. They are both currently trying to recruit volunteers
for a tutoring program for elementary aged students. Volunteers would go to the
child’s home for 1 – 2 hours per week to work with the child. They would need
their own transportation to the child’s home. This is a commitment for the
entire school year, lasting until May 2014. Volunteers will offer 1-2 hours per
week and will have a flexible schedule.

Carmichael Training Systems is hiring for an endurance coach to work full time at its Tucson, AZ location. The right candidate will possess strong organization and communication skills. He/she will be responsible for coaching a variety of endurance athletes from the weekend warrior to the elite utilizing phone, internet, downloadable training devices and e-mail communication. Our coaches are arranged in various coaching PODs where more senior coaches are teamed up with junior coaches to facilitate free knowledge flow and mentorship opportunities.
Responsibilities:
1. Monitoring and developing training programs according to the CTS training methodology.
2. Providing written and verbal feedback to athletes regarding all aspects of training.
5. Performing physiological testing on athletes, including lactate threshold testing and VO2 max testing.
6. Attending events/races as a representative of the company.
7. Giving informative lectures and presentations to the local community.
Requirements:
1. B.S. or M.S. degree in Exercise Science or equivalent field of study preferred.
2. Extensive first-hand experience as an athlete (preferably in endurance sports).
3. If already coaching, provide documented history of athletes’ long-term development and success (2 years minimum).
4. Possess, or be in the process of obtaining, a National Governing body (NGB) coaching license: USA Cycling, USA Triathlon, USA Swimming, USA Track and Field, etc.
5. Possess, or be in the process of obtaining, additional licenses or certifications: ACE, ACSM, NATA, NSCA, etc.
6. Ability to devote at least 40 hours per week to coaching and coaching development

My recently developed 3-credit hour elective course, KIN 422: Advanced Principles of Group Exercise Leadership, will be available again for enrollment in the Fall 2013 semester.
Course description: Theories, principles and procedures involved with leading group fitness classes. Students will gain knowledge and experience in class design and choreography development. Programming for children, older adults, pregnancy and aquatic exercise will be included. Practical and written assessments will occur throughout the semester. Participation in group exercise classes outside of class is a requirement. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in the AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification hosted in Godwin Hall in December 2013.
This course will sharpen skills necessary to be an effective instructor in a variety of physical activity settings - group exericse, personal training, coaching lifts, for example. The ability to communicate in a clear, conscise way is universal.
Course prerequisites: GKIN 100, KIN 202, OR PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR
This course will be half lecture and half physical activity lab. The lab will allow students the opportunity to practice the theory learned from lecture.
When: Monday/Wednesday 2:30pm-3:45pm. Location in Godwin 208 and Multipurpose Room.

My recently developed 3-credit hour elective course, KIN
422: Advanced Principles of Group Exercise Leadership, will be available again
for enrollment in the Fall 2013 semester.
Course
description: Theories, principles and
procedures involved with leading group fitness classes. Students will gain
knowledge and experience in class design and choreography development.
Programming for children, older adults, pregnancy and aquatic exercise will be
included. Practical and written assessments will occur throughout the semester.
Participation in group exercise classes is a requirement. Students will have the
opportunity to enroll in the AFAA Primary Group Exercise
Certification.

prerequisites: GKIN 100, KIN 202, OR
PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR
This course will be half
lecture and half physical activity lab. The lab will allow students the
opportunity to practice the theory learned from
lecture.

Overcoming Barriers
Interested in working with individuals with disabilities in a physical activity setting? This practicum or internship oportunity is offered through the Kinesiology department and serves Harrisonburg/surrounding area.
Overview: JMU’s Overcoming Barriers (OB) program that affords students the opportunity to mentor children/adults with disabilities within a physical activity setting. OB offers a wide variety of physical activity programs in which individuals with disabilities can participate. Individuals with disabilities will be matched with a mentor who will assist them during their specific program for a minimum of once a week for eight weeks. The mentors will be assigned an individual based on their schedules, interests, as well as their level of comfort/experience. All mentors receive training and support from our OB staff.
Dr. Tom Moran (morante@jmu.edu) is interested in having an ES practicum or internship student help with OB during the spring semester. You would likely be involved in all aspects of the OB program from planning to participant recruitment to program execution.
